A Lebanese diaspora podcast about home, distance and belonging
Inner Narratives is a Lebanese diaspora podcast in the sense that matters most: it is about the inner life of people who carry Lebanon with them, wherever they are. Each episode is one honest conversation, recorded in Beirut, in English, hosted by Nadine Zakhem (Nadz).
We do not chase headlines. We ask what leaving, staying and returning actually feel like, and we give people the time to answer properly.
Who is this page for?
It is for Lebanese people who live somewhere else. You may have left last year or your family may have left two generations ago. Either way, part of you is still in Lebanon, and part of you is not.
It is also for people who came back. Returning is its own kind of migration. The country moved on while you were away, and so did you.
We make the show from Beirut, but many of the people who listen are far from it. This page explains what they tend to find here.
Why do people abroad listen?
Because the conversations sound like home without being about the news. We do not cover politics or headlines. We talk with one person at a time about the inner side of a life: pressure, ambition, grief, family, faith and the question of where you belong.
Many of our guests have lived abroad, studied abroad or returned. They describe the gap between the life people see and the life they feel. Listeners abroad often tell us that gap is familiar.
The conversations are in English, with the occasional Arabic word when English does not have the right one. That makes them easy to share with friends, partners and children who grew up outside Lebanon.
What does leaving Lebanon do to identity?
There is no single answer, and we do not pretend there is one. What we can say is that the question keeps coming up. Guests talk about being too Lebanese in one place and not Lebanese enough in another.
Some describe guilt for leaving. Some describe guilt for staying. Some describe the strange calm of finally choosing. We let each person describe it in their own words, without trying to turn it into a lesson.
If that is the part that speaks to you, start with our topic page on identity and belonging, and our topic page on migration and return. Both collect every episode where this comes up.
What does a typical episode feel like?
It feels slow, in a good way. One guest, one host, and enough time for a thought to finish. Nadine Zakhem (Nadz) asks questions and then waits.
There is no panel, no debate and no hot take. The aim is accuracy, not drama. People say what happened and what it cost, and then what they understand now that they did not understand before.
Many listeners abroad play an episode on a commute or a long walk. Others keep a notebook open. Each episode page includes reflection prompts you can copy and keep.
How is this different from a news podcast?
News shows explain what is happening to the country. We try to understand what is happening inside the people who live its story. Both matter. They are simply different jobs.
So you will not hear opinions on parties or elections here. You will hear a doctor describe exhaustion, a founder describe doubt, a musician describe the pull of home. That is the category we chose.
How can I stay close from abroad?
The simplest way is to follow the show on Spotify or YouTube so new conversations reach you. Instagram carries short clips that are easy to send to someone who needs to hear them.
You can also join the Reflection Circle, our quiet newsletter. It arrives when there is something worth saying, and never more often than that.
