Dr. Hadi Akl
on Inner Narratives, Episode 12: The Mind Decides
Cosmetic dentist, founder of one of Lebanon's leading cosmetic dentistry practices
Dr. Hadi Akl, cosmetic dentist, founder of one of Lebanon's leading cosmetic dentistry practices, joins Nadz on Inner Narratives in Episode 12, The Mind Decides, a conversation about what 33 days on survivor teaches you about yourself and climbing in minus thirty-one degrees with your son.
Who is Dr. Hadi Akl?
Dr. Hadi Akl is a cosmetic dentist who built one of Lebanon's leading practices while living through the country's hardest years. Outside the clinic he has spent thirty-three days on Survivor and climbed Kilimanjaro and Elbrus, the latter in minus thirty-one degrees alongside his son. He talks about endurance as a mental discipline first, and about what extreme environments reveal that ordinary life keeps hidden.
What does Hadi talk about on the podcast?
Your body can train. Your mind decides. Dr. Hadi Akl has tested that sentence in unusually literal conditions, and this conversation is about what it means in ordinary ones.
We start with Survivor: thirty-three days of hunger, exposure and competition, and what happens to a person when the distractions are removed and there is nothing left to hide behind. He is precise about the difference between the physical difficulty, which is measurable, and the mental one, which is not.
Then the mountains. Kilimanjaro, and later Elbrus at minus thirty-one degrees, climbed with his son. He describes the point on a climb where preparation stops helping and the only remaining resource is the decision to continue. That threshold, he argues, is the same one people meet in far less dramatic settings, in a career, in an illness, in a bad year.
The third strand is the practice. Building one of Lebanon's leading cosmetic dentistry clinics through economic collapse and instability required the same faculty: continuing when the evidence supports stopping. He is candid about the chapters he does not usually discuss, and about the gap between how a successful practice looks and what it took.
What holds the conversation together is a simple, unromantic argument. Physical preparation gets you ready. Mental strength gets you through. Most people train only the first one.

In Hadi's words
Your body can train. Your mind decides.
At minus thirty-one degrees there is nothing left to negotiate with except yourself.
Physical preparation gets you ready. Mental strength gets you through.
